LANKS and Eremin’s Newest Masterpiece

LANKS is not a new name for SnG. He was relatively under my radar for awhile, having shared some great singles but lost among the constant bombardment of new records and live shows. What made me really pay attention was an innocent tweet some months ago, declaring he would be collaborating with Andrei Eremin, a talented up and coming producer that I’ve also been following for some time. He released a great 5-track EP in late 2015 but the vast majority of his work lies with collaborators of Australia’s indie royalty, including Banoffee, Japanese Wallpaper, Chet Faker, Miami Horror, and so many more. Delving more into his career, I learned this was not the first time LANKS and Eremin had worked together, which makes sense given the exact sound LANKS has developed over the years. But that doesn’t change the fact that Viet Rose is a masterpiece.

LANKS had a reputation for being a crooner in his early work. His voice reaches such wondrous heights, always backed by electronic instrumentation for an experience that drew comparisons to BANKS when both were gaining popularity in 2014. He is also a beautiful lyricist, putting his vocals to good work navigating rhythms of piano and poetry. On Viet Rose, the stories are as uplifting as the production, ranging from a quiet duet in “April” to the energetic and genre-spanning “Golden Age.” Eremin’s presence is also apparent throughout the record, even subtly, as in the swelling album-closing lullaby, “Kyneton.”

Given the magnitude of this EP, LANKS has proven that he is a well-rounded artist, always looking to expand his and our horizons. We can safely expect a lot more ingenuity in the R&B genre from him, but what to expect next from Eremin is far more hazy. All the artists he collaborates with are innovators in their own right, so we’ll just have to wait for the next project to see what kind of genius thing he’s up to.
