It’s hard to set your expectations too high when it comes to Terra Lightfoot. Her sound can be easily compared to The Black Keys, with a mastery of guitars and pounding kick drums, and her new album delivers on all fronts. On New Mistakes, she reaches new milestones with her evocative songwriting, singing about heartache and emotional catharsis with an equal amount of her signature grit.
Wasting no time, the track kicks off with the driving “Paradise.” With a supportive organ and a great deal of vocal range, Lightfoot paints a fleeting utopia. Emotional highs can be found on “Pinball King,” an adorable date night tale, or on the globe-trotting “Stars Over Dakota.” As uplifting as her ode to the country music legend Norma Gale is, a cloud hangs overhead, a reminder that life is too short to do anything other than what you love. Lightfoot keeps a notably positive outlook throughout the rest of the record, even when it gets tough, such as on “Get High” or “Drifter.” And even the latter track has already begun the climb back to affability. That just goes to show her resilience–you can’t keep Terra Lightfoot down for long.
