Abandon the idea of discomfort. Minais B, also known as Villads Klint, is a Copenhagen-based artist whose new release will not allow you space for such a concept. As The River At Its Source is a sixteen minute long ambient drone manifesto, narrated by a woman with an alarmingly steady tone despite the chaos surrounding her. This record is confrontational, not unlike the musings of Jenny Hval, though where Hval’s work turns melodic, As The River’s tape frays. It is a challenging mix that moves quickly, so much so that you may lose your balance.
Our narrator describes a fairly literal encounter between two people across some discrete plane of separation. The scenes are surreal and erotic; some “lyrics” are printed on the front and back covers of the record, giving a good idea of exactly what Minais B wants you to take away from this experience. Toward the end of the odyssey, a distorted voice interrupts a particularly cathartic mess of electronics, drunkenly wailing about his superiority over you. Luckily, the woman comes back for a final word, providing a sense of serenity if only due to familiarity. It is almost as if she were chaos itself.
