Top 3 EPs of 2015: #2 – Headcase by Day Wave

Day Wave is likely not a new name for many. According to Hype Machine, Day Wave was the 14th most reblogged artist of the year. During 2015 he dropped a debut EP and also toured with the likes of Blonde Redhead and Albert Hammond Jr. Jackson Phillips released Headcase in July, and it is an indie pop blessing.

Surf rock has a new powerful player on the scene. The EP opens up like Portamento, some static before the drums offer up a quick rhythm. Throughout the release there is a fair share of melancholy, but it isn’t something you could hear without listening to the lyrics. Each track may be filled with unending anxiety, but the twanging guitars and twinkling synths shield us from the self-pity.

“What am I good for?” Phillips asks in the opening track; it’s a sentiment he revisits often. Despondency suits him, he makes it fun. If this were a Michael Cera movie in 2009, “Drag” would have been the song under the montage of him and his love interest drifting apart.

“I know it’s hard being around me

I don’t want to be a drag
it’ll just make you mad”

According to an interview he gave to i-D, Phillips has more music on the way very soon. Follow him for more information.
