Is there a term for an artist who has a perfect record as a one-hit wonder? “Lypso Illusion” is the b-side to “Disco Illusion,” the only single to Stephen Encinas’ name for over 40 years. I can imagine the record’s popularity upon release in 1979 and throughout the 80s, the heyday of DJing on wax. I have come to hear these songs thanks to the folks at Invisible City Editions, who reissued the record a decade ago. Then seemingly inexplicably the good folks (just DJ Supermarkt?) at Too Slow To Disco in Berlin, an organization dedicated to showcasing ’70s music, included Encinas in a 2022 compilation. And a fourth song popped up the following year. As befuddling as this release schedule feels, I don’t mind the prospect of more new songs from Stephen Encinas in perpetuity.
