“Russia’s complicated political history has always made it hard for musical trends to have staying power. … Once the Soviet Union was dissolved completely, a whole new era of pop music began in earnest, almost immediately rendering Soviet ideas (including music) outdated.”
Until the mid-2000s, that is. The music of former Soviet Union territories has expanded into seemingly infinite permutations of itself, with today’s indie musicians using the internet as a resource to appeal to their past and present.
